UAn American soldier was detained in Russia last week on charges of “criminal misconduct”. The information was released this Monday by the North American press.

According to NBC News, which cites several United States Army officials, the soldier is accused of robbing a woman. The soldier was stationed in South Korea and traveled to Russia on his own and not on an official mission.

In a statement sent to the same station, Cynthia O. Smith, an Army spokeswoman, said that the soldier was detained in Vladivostok, Russia, on May 2, “on charges of criminal misconduct.”

“The Russian Federation has notified the US State Department of the criminal detention in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations,” it said. “The Army has notified his family and the US Department of State is providing appropriate consular support to the soldier in Russia. Given the sensitivity of this matter, we are unable to provide further details at this time,” he added.

The Russian press is reporting the arrest, citing the US station and the Army spokeswoman.

Please remember that current US State Department travel guidance restricts citizens from traveling to Russia.

Several US citizens, such as Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich or former marine Paul Whelan, have been arrested and sentenced to heavy prison sentences in recent years in that country. Washington, which has supported Ukraine against the Russian invasion for two years, accuses Moscow of taking them hostage in order to exchange them.
