ANDn 2011, 31-year-old Jaqueline Gmack was in a coma for 17 days after taking ibuprofen to relieve menstrual pain. Years later, the Brazilian woman is still fighting to regain part of the vision she lost.

Around 48 hours after taking the pill, his eye started itching and he ended up going to the hospital after waking up with blood blisters in his mouth.

Once in the hospital, the bubbles spread to her entire body and she was placed in an induced coma for 17 days.

In an interview with The Sun, the woman reveals that she was diagnosed with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which happens when the body overreacts to a medication, especially antibiotics and anti-inflammatory painkillers. Without treatment, the reaction can be fatal.

“When I woke up, I didn’t know what had happened. I realized that my entire body was bandaged, my vision was completely blurred and I had a tube in my throat, but I didn’t feel any pain. Only then did the penny start to drop. I realized that I was very weak and that something very serious had happened. It was like I was burned from the inside out,” she revealed.

The syndrome left Jaqueline with scars and seriously damaged her vision. “The doctors told me it was a miracle that I survived. My family didn’t let me see myself in the mirror for a few days. When I finally saw myself, it was someone I didn’t recognize,” she recalls.

Since her first operation in 2011, Jaqueline has undergone more than 24 procedures, including cornea, amniotic membrane and stem cell transplants. Currently, he has about 40% of his vision.
