Marco dos Corais competes for international architecture award |

One of the main urban interventions in the capital of Alagoas is competing this year for a renowned European Architecture award. The ArchDaily Brasil Award – Work of the Year awards projects in 19 categories by popular vote in Portuguese-speaking countries and Marco dos Corais, on Praia de Ponta Verde, in Maceió, is one of the competitors.

The first stage of voting, to select 15 finalists, runs until March 27th and allows you to vote on the same work more than once, but only once a day. For the Secretary of State for Tourism of Alagoas, Bárbara Braga, Marco dos Corais was designed to be a reference point in the capital with as little urban intervention as possible.

“In addition to explaining a little about the Coral Coast, so important to guarantee our calm, warm and crystal clear waters, the viewpoint over the sea also functions as a space for contemplation of both the sea and the city, as it has many glass spaces, structure in neutral tones and discreet and highly resistant urban furniture for contemplating the privileged view”, explained Bárbara.

The project competing for the award was prepared by the Alagoas Architecture firm Angeli Leão and, later, donated to the Government of Alagoas, which carried out the work through the State Secretariat for Infrastructure of Alagoas (Seinfra). Opened in 2022, Marco dos Corais has an installation of fiber optic lights that form a wind rose, pointing, from that position, to the cardinal points North, South, East and West.

The space also has an aluminum walkway where it is possible to observe the movement of the sea beneath the monument, as well as a path that shows, with special aluminum luminaires and LED lights, all the beaches in Alagoas and Pernambuco that are part of the Costa de Corais, the largest coastal marine environmental conservation unit in Brazil.
