One of the guests at the “Angels with weapons” exhibition, at Pinakotheke Cultural, in Botafogo, said that art is worth every drop of sweat. What about? The weekend in Rio was one of record-breaking temperatures, with a thermal sensation of 60.1 degrees on Saturday and 62.3 on Sunday.
It was an endless back and forth for the exhibition (more or less 50 works) by artists Sérgio Camargo (1930-1990), Lygia Clark (1920-1988), Mira Schendel (1919-1988) and Hélio Oiticica (1937-1980), curated by Max Perlingeiro, director of Pinakotheke, and collaboration with artist Luciano Figueiredo.
The exhibition is a tribute to the British critic and curator Guy Brett (1942-2021), who played an important role in the internationalization of Brazilian art by creating, together with the Filipino artist David Medalla (1942-2020) and other friends, the Signals gallery, which from 1964 to 1966, showed works by these artists – four pieces of art that were originally in the gallery are on display and were the most observed: “Bicho-Contrário II” (1961), “Espaço Modulado nº 4” (1958) and “Espaço modulado nº 8” (1959), by Lygia Clark, and “Relief” (1964), by Sérgio Camargo.
At the opening, a special guest, the “motivator” of the exhibition: the art critic, historian and philosopher Yve-Alain Bois, researcher at the Institute for Advanced Study, in Princeton, USA. On the occasion, the double publication “Angels with Guns” was also launched – the first, with 132 pages and the text that gives the exhibition its name “Angels with Guns”), by Yve-Alain himself, who sent the text to be translated into Portuguese and encouraged Perlingeiro to put together the exhibition based on the essay, a text about the importance of Signals and friendship. The other volume has 128 pages with images of the works and period photographs, in addition to texts by Guy Brett.
