All about Artificial intelligence

*By Valter Pieracciani, founder of Pieracciani Desenvolvimento de Empresas, winnovation consultancy

I’m very scared. I’ve been studying what experts say about what could happen in the publishing market and in the field of intellectual property. In short, artificial intelligence will enable entire books to be written by computers, simply by the “author” choosing the theme, number of pages and a few other parameters. Shocking, don’t you think?

Read more:

Computers will research the subject in thousands of texts stored on the network, select paragraphs and sentences, and put together something “new” from the composition of the short selected excerpts. Of course, adjustments will be necessary, a final review, but…

A similar situation already occurs in the structuring of petitions and opinions prepared by law firms. Interestingly, it would now be correct to say that the firm produced the material, and not its lawyers. With the help of similarity recognition software, it is now known that school papers, dissertations and even academic theses are being written with this little help.

I’m not a lawyer, I don’t even consider myself a great writer, but I’m working to publish my fifth book and I know how much work that takes, or used to take… I’ve always sought differentiation and originality in my work. Maybe that’s why I feel so intrigued by news from the world of intellectual property in the “post-artificial intelligence” era.

For me, the big mess starts there. Who would be the author? The reviewer? The owner of the machine where the text was “written”, identified by its IP? The many authors of the original texts used? Who placed the order? Second point: what interest will readers have in something that, for better or worse, has been reheated? Where does the fascination of discovery in reading end? Glamor and charisma expressed in a text? How can we define what a text or book is? original?

Well, I have my feelings about how this strange reality will unfold. Texts, to be considered original, will be restricted to two categories. The first is those who tell unprecedented stories and talk about our lives and the world; These will continue to be effervescent, as there will always be a new story to tell.

The other type of writing that will remain original will be that in which the (real) author manages to imprint his emotions. A kind of writing of the soul, as psychologist and writer Monica Guttmann often quotes.

Computers don’t have a soul, at least until now, and that’s where the big difference could be. Authors capable of transmitting in texts what comes from the bottom of their hearts would give the reader the possibility of recognizing them as original. In poetry, for example, the maximum expression of this category occurs. I want to believe that computers cannot write brilliant poetry or texts that bring out the author’s emotions.

In short: if you, like me, dream of writing, if you believe that a person only feels fully fulfilled after having written a book, as the popular saying goes, try to record your deepest emotions. And take note of remarkable stories that happened to you.

The other possibility, which constitutes a true testament to mediocrity, is to press a button and ask your computer to help you.
