The novel that won the Jabuti Prize in 2021, Jeferson Tenório’s work deals with racism and was removed from state schools in Mato Grosso do Sul. The situation occurred after the matter was presented in the state’s Legislative Assembly. The work was rejected by deputies who used profanity to describe it.
The publisher, Companhia das Letras, saw with “astonishment” the State Government’s decision to remove the books. According to the note, the decision was based on distortions of the content and isolated excerpts that were covered in the work. To try to prevent the books from being recalled, the publisher filed a writ of mandamus.
According to governor Eduardo Riedel (PSDB), the concept of the book is noble and should be worked on in schools, but the language would not be appropriate. The governor further explained that he spoke to many parents before making the decision. The work had been sent to 75 of the 349 school units.
