WDriving can become a daily action or just be done sporadically, but whether you are an experienced driver or just take a ‘ride’ every now and then, it is important to be aware of some mistakes that may be happening.
The Automóvel Club de Portugal (ACP) realizes that, to extend the life of a vehicle, it is important to carry out maintenance, avoiding errors – which can happen either due to carelessness or lack of knowledge.
But, reasons aside, what are the mistakes you should avoid?
Failure to check tire pressure
According to an article published on the ACP website, tire grip “is essential”, as they are the part of the vehicle that is in contact with the road. “Check tire pressure regularly, without forgetting the spare, as this is essential for any change to occur safely”, it reads.
Not paying attention to electrical components
Another important tip is to pay attention to the vehicle’s electrical components, of which there are many – from headlights to fog lights, including the battery. Paying attention to these components is also “essential” and the ACP warns that if you have any doubts, it is best to take the car to a workshop. Paying attention to the lights on the instrument panel is important to be aware of the condition of the car.
Keep your hand on the gear lever while driving
This is one of the most common mistakes – even though it may seem like the force exerted on the lever is minimal, it ends up having an influence on the driver’s wear and tear.
Accelerate immediately when cold
Another common mistake is to accelerate too hard as soon as you start driving, as the engine must operate at a temperature between 80 and 100 degrees. “And until the ideal temperature is reached, there may be friction between the mechanical components. Always start driving calmly, to allow the engine to warm up properly”, explain the experts.
Drive the car in reserve
With the fuel in reserve, the engine will absorb impurities that are at the bottom of the tank.
Keep your foot on the clutch
The pressure exerted on the clutch pedal, even if slight, promotes its wear.
Cross speed bumps diagonally
Crossing speed bumps with just one side wears out the suspensions more and, therefore, the best way to cross speed bumps is with straight wheels – and at a reduced speed.
Change the engine oil only taking into account the kilometers traveled
The oil has an expiration date that must not be exceeded, and therefore must be changed as necessary – so that it does not degrade or lose its ability to lubricate and protect the components.
Not checking the water in the radiator fluid
It is also essential to check the radiator fluid. “If necessary and you do not have the recommended liquid, add only distilled water and never ‘normal’ water, to avoid corrosion of the system. Antifreezes have optimized and specific formulas. Adding water will modify the formula. Choose the coolant indicated by the manufacturer”, explain the ACP.
