Swedish car manufacturer Volvo Cars produces its last car with a diesel engine this Wednesday. It is a Volvo communicated.

Volvo recalls that it fulfills the promise made in 2023 to abandon the production of automobiles diesel. The announcement of the end of this type of car took place during the Climate Week in New York, in September 2023, making the brand one of the first car manufacturers with combustion engines to take this step.

“The decision to completely eliminate engines diesel illustrates how quickly both the automotive industry and customer preferences are changing to respond to the climate crisis”, says the brand in a statement distributed this Wednesday.

And remember that just four years ago the diesel engine led new vehicle sales, while electrified models were just starting to make their mark.

Since then, this trend has reversed, “largely driven by the evolution of market demand, stricter emissions regulations and Volvo’s commitment to electrification”. “The majority of the brand’s sales in Europe now consist of electrified cars”, Volvo also informs.

Remember that, in 2022, the Swedish brand had already decided to abandon the development of new combustion engines. That year, the company sold its stake in Aurobay, joint venture which housed all remaining assets for combustion engines, “ensuring that Volvo would no longer spend a single crown [sueca] of its R&D (research and development) budget in the development of new internal combustion engines”.

From 2030, Volvo Cars intends to sell only 100% electric cars and guarantees that it intends to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.
