UA 56-year-old man obtained a reward of around ten euros from the fast-food company Burger King at the beginning of March, after finding a black pencil in a hamburger at the restaurant in Altkirch, France, last December.
On December 10, the man, who was having lunch at the American brand with his daughter, made the unusual discovery. “During the second bite, he said to myself: ‘There’s a bone here'”, he recalls to Le Parisien. “The pen was well camouflaged, nothing came off the paper. Fortunately I started on the side and not towards the pencil”, he continues.
Surprised by this discovery, the man went to the restaurant counter to return the pencil and the hamburger, which cost 2.90 euros. There, they tell him that this pencil is, in fact, a felt-tip pen intended for children, who use it to play in the area dedicated to them.
At the time, the man received a new burger as compensation. The manager also informed him that he would be entitled to a free menu on his next visit.
But the man didn’t stop there. The next day, he sent an email to Burger King France customer service, attaching an invoice and photos of his meal to substantiate his complaint. Some exchanges follow, in which the brand asks for details about the burger.
Burger King ended up sending an apology letter to the dissatisfied customer four months later. “Please be aware that any suspicion of foreign bodies found in our products is treated with the utmost seriousness,” the letter states.
To compensate, Burger King also sent the man a voucher for a medium menu, the value of which is therefore between around 8 and 12 euros. According to the injured party, this compensation is “a little ridiculous” given the damages suffered.
