Tesla remains committed to meeting its goal of reduce its workforce by 10% and will now lay off more than 2,600 workers in Austin, Texas, where its headquarters and one of its main factories are located. The layoffs will take place over 14 days and the company expects them to begin in mid-June, according to Bloomberg.

Before the most recent waves of layoffs began, Tesla had around 140,000 workers globally. In order to reduce costs and increase profits, the company will lay off more than 20 thousand peopleaccording to what sources close to the company and who know its restructuring plan told Bloomberg.

The factory located in Austin employs around 22 thousand people and produces the Model Y – the company’s most popular – and the Cybertuck. Of the 2,600 workers that Tesla intends to lay off, it is not known how many are employed at this factory.

This new announcement of separations comes after a week that was particularly difficult for the automotive giant. The company announced a new price reduction strategy in the main world markets, after recording drops in annual sales for the first time since the pandemic. In the first quarter of the year, the company led by Elon Musk delivered only around 386 thousand cars, a figure below what the market expected and which corresponds to a decline of 8.5%, compared to the same period last year. Tesla will present its quarterly results this Tuesday.
