“O Public Transport Service Concession Contract for Passenger Subways (CCSPTM2015) is in force until July 1, 2024, and it is necessary to ensure the continuity of the concessioned public service, especially as the current temporal limitation of the concessionaire’s administration powers is already conditioning , in several areas of its activity”, reads the order published in Diário da República.
According to the diploma, which had been approved by the Council of Ministers on March 21, the Government understands that the extension of the concession period “is necessary to pursue the public interest” and to implement projects and investments already underway, considering it to be the time necessary for the “amortization and remuneration of the capital invested by the concessionaire”.
At issue is the development of the signaling systems modernization project, the acquisition of 14 new triple units, the extension of the Yellow and Green lines (Rato – Cais do Sodré), the expansion of the Red line to Alcântara and the construction of the light metro area between the municipalities of Loures and Odivelas.
The financial compensation that the Government will allocate to Metropolitano de Lisboa, until 2030, will be around 71 million euros, with the balance calculated in the year preceding it being added to this amount.
The costs will be covered by funds registered or to be registered in the budget of the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Environment and Climate Action.
