JHave you ever heard of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)? It is a “communication disorder in the gut-brain axis that affects 10 to 14% of the world’s population and is twice as common in women as in men”, the Biocodex Microbiota Institute, in a statement.

It causes unpleasant symptoms such as recurring abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and/or diarrhea. And, of course, it has a significant impact on quality of life.

To help those suffering from this condition, the institute’s experts shared some tips that are very useful and easy to put into practice on a daily basis.

Tips for dealing (better) with Irritable Bowel Syndrome:

  • “Eat regular meals and eat slowly”;
  • “Avoid skipping meals or going long periods without eating”;
  • “Drink water and avoid caffeinated drinks”;
  • “Drink at least eight glasses of water daily and reduce coffee or tea consumption to three a day”;
  • “Avoid the consumption of carbonated drinks”;
  • “Adjust your fiber consumption and avoid sugar and sweeteners. The ideal is to consult a nutritionist, who can understand what type of fiber and what quantities should be ingested daily”;
  • Maintaining a “healthier and more active lifestyle. Practicing physical exercise regularly and abandoning a more sedentary lifestyle is also important in managing the disease”;
  • Control stress levels. “Stress plays a very important role in IBS. Peaks of stress and anxiety can exacerbate symptoms and even trigger crises. It is therefore essential to control stress levels, using, for example, meditation or therapy.”
