Ricky Martin only revealed his sexuality in 2010 thanks to the encouragement of his father, Enrique, as the singer himself revealed in a conversation with Andy Cohen, on SiriusXM.
When remembering his life and career before coming out as gay, the 52-year-old artist says that his team encouraged him to hide his sexuality.
“It will be the end of your career”, he recalled when quoting what he heard at the time. “You don’t need to tell the world. Your friends know, your family knows… Why do you need to talk about this in front of the cameras?”, they also told him at the time.
According to People, although the team “didn’t understand the importance” of coming out, the artist’s father understood his side – especially after Ricky Martin welcomed his twin sons, Matteo and Valentino, in 2008.
“He asked me what I was going to do, if I was going to teach my children to lie”, he recalled, adding later that he resolved that issue by publicly admitting his sexuality.
It should be remembered that the singer was married to Jwan Yosef between 2017 and 2023.
