Sara Correia at the Porto Coliseu: a night of “Freedom”, from Chelas to the world – Music

-

This Friday, March 22nd, the Coliseu Porto Ageas hosted the concert presenting the fado singer’s latest album. The room, completely sold out, actually witnessed, and in the words of Sara Correia, «the story of my life, from the fados that mark my childhood, to a journey through my albums ‘Sara Correia’, ‘Do Coração’ and the most recent ‘Liberty’».

The lineup is a tribute to fado, great composers, eternal fado singers and timeless singers. In the most diverse forms of fado, the bass and drums will join the Portuguese guitar, to remind the public that fado can be renewed.

“Why do Fado”, “You win Always” and “No se delay” are the first three themes chosen to open the show. In a dark setting, with the band occupying the sides of the stage, Sara Correia “shines” in the center of the scene.

The concert continues, with “Não se delay”, “If the world gives so many turns” and “Agora o tempo”, on a journey between the albums ‘Sara Correia’ and ‘Do Coração’. The curtains on the stage literally open for the video projection of Maria Nazaré, one of the young singer’s references, and the beautiful duet “Tu não me dizes”.

Each song is sung with a feeling and energy that moves the audience. An audience that stands up, time and time again, to applaud Sara Correia, her band, her music, fado.

Pointing out the show’s greatest moments or highlighting the theme that brought the audience’s attention is impossible. Not because they didn’t exist, but because there were too many. In a succession of emotions that make our skin crawl and leave our eyes in tears.

The surprise of the night was reserved for the apotheotic entrance of Pedro Abrunhosa, on the piano, and the interpretation of the theme “Que o Amor te salve”. What a beautiful moment! How much energy and feeling can fit into a song? Just recovered from the whirlwind of emotions of the wonderful duet, “Ilumina-me” follows. The genuineness and grandeur of Pedro Abrunhosa, who lends a hand to the newest talents and points them to new directions, without pretense, is one of the most beautiful gestures of love for music.

The show continues, between “Chelas”, “Marias na Terra”, “Eu Quero” and “Madrugou”, with Sara Correia’s vibrant delivery, to each theme, to each word. “I want to live” is, in unison, sung, from beginning to end, by a huge room, too small for so much talent. What a beautiful tribute to one of the biggest names in Portuguese music, António Variações.

On a night of other tributes, of trips to the past, of new futures, the show ends with the sound of “Estranha forma de Vida”. How could we not “bring to the stage” Amália Rodrigues, the biggest name in fado?

In the encore, Sara Correia joins the Coliseu audience and, in the center of the audience, performs, in a unique way, “Portuguese Fado”. A palpable energy, where you seem to hear the rhythms of racing hearts, for the opportunity to live that moment. There is no cell phone that registers a ‘Freedom’ that rings and encourages us, in a chaos of emotions, to be the best version of ourselves.

There were more than two hours of show, in a time that flew freely, with no strings attached. The message is simple, Sara tells us, “I have freedom to be who I am, to be how I am”. Is there anything more genuine?
