The film Barbie was an undeniable success last year, grossing $1,445,638,421 at the box office worldwide and even being nominated for multiple awards, including the Oscar for Best Film.

However, many viewers complained about the “woke” message conveyed by the film, an opinion shared by one of today’s biggest pop music stars: Shakira.

This is what the singer had to say about the film (thanks, Variety!):

“My kids absolutely hated it,” he says. “They felt it was emasculating. And I agree, to a certain extent. I am raising two boys. I want them to feel powerful too [enquanto] respect women. I like pop culture when it tries to empower women without robbing men of the ability to be men, to also protect and provide. I believe in giving women all the tools and the confidence that we can do everything without losing our essence, without losing our femininity.”

But the singer doesn’t stop there:

“I think men have a purpose in society and women also have another purpose,” he added. “We complement each other and that complement should not be lost.”

Do you agree with his words?
