“WI appointed a lawyer and instructed the lawyer to present a request today to the Coordinator of the Public Prosecutor’s Office at the Supreme Court of Justice so that they can proceed with my hearing as quickly as possible to clarify any doubts they may have about the suspicion they have because There is nothing worse than having a suspicion and it not being clarified”, said António Costa upon leaving the inauguration of the Government of Luís Montenegro.

Expressing himself “fully available to collaborate with justice”, the now former prime minister reiterated that, as he said when he resigned, “whoever is subject to public suspicion” like the one that existed against him “must preserve institutions.”

António Costa had been asked by journalists whether he still hoped to serve Portugal, starting by responding that he was “very grateful to the Portuguese” for allowing him to serve the country “for so many years”, a mission for which he is very grateful.

“I want to thank all those who collaborated with me in the Government, I want to thank my family, in particular my wife, for all the support they have given me these years as Prime Minister, previously as Minister, as Mayor, as Secretary of State. It’s been many years and they have honored me a lot and I am very satisfied”, he thanked.

The former chief executive assured that he was “always available to serve Portugal”, but considered that it was “also time for suspicions to be clarified because there is nothing worse than having suspicions”.

“We always serve Portugal from Europe because Portugal is in Europe”, he replied, when asked if he was available for a European position, refusing to answer any further questions and wishing “good afternoon and best wishes to each and everyone also”.

The previous legislature was interrupted following the resignation of the Prime Minister, António Costa (PS), after it was made public that he was the target of a judicial inquiry opened by the Public Ministry at the Supreme Court of Justice as part of the so-called Operation Influencer.

This legal case is related to the production of energy from hydrogen in Sines, Setúbal, and to the project to build a data center (Data Center) in the industrial and logistics area of Sines by Start Campus.

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, immediately accepted the prime minister’s resignation and two days later announced to the country the dissolution of parliament and the call for elections, which took place on March 10, giving the majority to the PSD /CDS-PP/PPM.
