O President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will have severed relations with his son, Nuno Rebelo de Sousa, following the controversial case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who received million-dollar treatment at Santa Maria Hospital.
The information, initially released by the newspaper Público, was advanced by the newspaper Correio Braziliense, which quotes the President of the Republic.
“It’s unforgivable, because he knows that I have a public and political position, and I pay for it. There are worse things in life. I don’t know if he will be held responsible, I don’t care“, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said in a conversation with foreign journalists, referring to his son Nuno’s alleged involvement in the controversial case.
The same newspaper argues that the already shaky relationship between the Head of State and his son, who lives in Brazil, found its ‘executioner’ when the controversial case broke out at the end of last year. Last Christmas, the division actually resulted in the President of the Republic spending Christmas at home, away from his grandchildren.
“He is 51 years old, if he were my oldest and favorite grandson, aged 20, I would feel co-responsible. But, at 51 years old, he is older and vaccinated”, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, whose estrangement from his son Nuno allegedly started on a trip by the President of the Republic to Brazil.
There, Nuno will have scheduled a meeting with Brazilian politicians, to show influence with the Portuguese Executive, says Correio Braziliense. When Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa discovered the reasons for the meeting, he responded by leaving.
“I explained to a former Brazilian president, party presidents, governors that, if I accepted that he go, they would be convinced that the best way to reach me was through their son. Later, however, Nuno contacted his father again, to say that the Civil House was against him. The episode took place in 2019 and the controversy ended up becoming public in November 2023, shortly before former Prime Minister António Costa resigned, following Operation Influencer.
It was a “boring” period, admitted Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, revealing with laughter that, at that time, the President of the Republic and the resigning Prime Minister consoled each other.

It is recalled that the case of the Portuguese-Brazilian twins who acquired Portuguese nationality and received in Portugal, in 2020, the drug Zolgensma, costing four million euros, was publicized by TVI, at the beginning of November 2023, and is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR).
The suspicions of favoritism came from an email message sent by Nuno Rebelo de Sousa to his father, talking about the subject.
