Pedro Bouças, former assistant coach of Jesualdo Ferreira at Santos, said he believes, this Tuesday, that Marcos Leonardo is the best option for Benfica’s attacking front. After scoring two goals against Sp. Braga, the Brazilian forward claims the starting spot with coach Roger Schmidt, something that Bouças considers to be more than fair.
“Tengstedt has played too many times because of what he brings defensively to the game. As Benfica has several players who don’t defend with quality, the way to compensate was to place a striker who runs a lot and helps in the defensive process. This penalized the use of Marcos Leonardo”, the Portuguese coach began by saying, speaking to Antena 1, continuing.
“I believe he already deserves [a titularidade] for a long time, taking into account that Benfica’s other two forwards have a very low performance. After another competition, in which he scored seven goals in 300 or so minutes, an absurd average, he deserves to be a starter and have continuity to fit in with the team and continue with this impact”, he stressed.
Asked if he is surprised by Marcos Leonardo’s quick adaptation to Portugal, Pedro Bouças only regrets the lack of playing time.
“Nothing surprising. The Marcos I saw play, who I know and who I had the pleasure of being close to, is a goalscorer by nature. He has a knack for almost always hitting the goal. What surprises me most is how little he uses him in Portugal”, finished.
