A Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) of Rio de Janeiro carried out an extensive cleaning operation on Copacabana Beach, south of Rio. The company removed 287 tons of rubbish after the concert by American singer Madonna, which took place on Saturday 4.

During the process, the beach and the main crossroads in the neighborhood received a cleaning operation, which included washing the streets with reused water.

To facilitate the proper disposal of waste by the public, the company made 1,500 240-liter containers available along Avenida Atlântica and on the main access roads, as well as near the city’s metro stations.

From 10pm onwards the service was intensified, and the entire beach and surrounding areas were clean in the early hours of Sunday 5th.
In addition to the street cleaners, Comlurb employed more than 65 vehicles in its operations, including 18 vehicles dedicated to hydraulic cleaning with reused water and 38 specialized equipment. Among these, ten tractors were used to sift the sand from the beach, both before and after the musical show.

The government of the State of Rio de Janeiro released on Monday the 6th the balance of the special operation carried out during the Madonna show.

During the day, the Fire Department rescued around 50 people who drowned in the sea off Copacabana. Rescues continued throughout the show. There were also terrestrial rescues, with clinical events, such as fainting.
