On the morning of this Friday, March 22nd, the Municipal Secretariat for the Environment, together with the Regional Environmental Protection Agency of the Rio Grande Basin (ARPA Rio Grande) and the Environmental Police held a meeting at Praça Dr. Augusto Silva in celebration of World Water Day. The main objective of the event was to highlight the importance of conserving this vital resource, while at the same time making an emphatic appeal to reduce the use of plastics and the correct disposal of these materials, which have been responsible for contaminating and polluting water.

At the end of the event, participants left with a renewed commitment to protecting the environment and adopting more responsible habits in relation to water use and waste management, recognizing that each small individual action can significantly contribute to preservation of this resource so precious for life on the planet.

“World Water Day: Preserving Our Most Precious Asset

On World Water Day, it is crucial that we reflect on the importance of this vital resource for life on our planet. Water not only sustains human life, but is also essential for ecosystems, agriculture, industry and many other essential activities.

Preserving water resources has become an urgent need. Increasing demand for water, coupled with climate change and environmental degradation, are threatening water availability and quality around the world. It is essential to take measures to conserve and protect our water resources for future generations.

One of the most significant challenges we face is plastic pollution in water. Millions of tons of plastic are dumped into oceans, rivers and lakes every year, causing irreparable damage to marine life and aquatic ecosystems. From microplastics to large plastic fragments, plastic contamination affects all forms of life, from microscopic organisms to large marine mammals.

Tackling plastic pollution requires collective action at local, national and global levels. Reducing the use of single-use plastics, recycling efficiently and adopting sustainable practices are essential steps to mitigating this growing threat.

On this World Water Day, we must renew our commitment to conserving water resources and protecting aquatic ecosystems. Each of us has a role to play in preserving this valuable resource. Together, we can work to ensure a sustainable future where clean, healthy water is accessible to all.”
