The Ministry of Health announced this Wednesday the expansion of the distribution of dengue vaccines to another 154 municipalities, as part of a strategy to avoid the expiration of 668 thousand doses close to their expiration datescheduled for April 30th.

This measure, which affects regions such as Central (ES), Betim (MG), Uberaba (MG), Central (ES), Betim (MG), Uberaba (MG), Uberlândia/Araguari (MG), Recife, Apucarana (PR) , Greater Florianópolis, Aquifer Guarani (SP), Metropolitan Region of Campinas (SP), São José do Rio Preto (SP) and São Paulo also aims to optimize the vaccination program in endemic areas.

The redistribution of doses in stock accompanies the purchase of a new shipment, totaling 930 thousand doses to be distributed. Until then, vaccination was restricted to children and adolescents aged 10 to 14, in 521 selected municipalities. Now, with the expansion, 154 new locations will benefit.

The Brazilian initiative stands out worldwide, being the pioneer country in offering the dengue vaccine in the public health system. This effort not only strengthens the fight against the disease in the country, but also serves as an example for other nations facing similar challenges.

Data from the ministry indicate that, since the start of vaccination, 1,235,119 doses have been sent to states and municipalities, with 534,631 doses already applied. However, there are 700,488 doses that have not yet been registered as applied. Furthermore, 13 of the 521 municipalities that received vaccines have not yet sent data to the federal government.

To avoid wasting unused doses, the Ministry of Health is preparing a technical note to regulate the redistribution of vaccines within the states themselves, as explained by Márcio Garcia, director of the Public Health Emergency Department.

This measure seeks to ensure that all available doses are used efficiently and that as many people as possible are protected against dengue.
