Human Milk Bank promotes awareness campaign for breast milk donation

Donating human milk is a noble act that is fundamental to saving the lives of premature babies. Therefore, the Human Milk Bank, an entity linked to the City of Arapiraca, through the Municipal Health Department, will promote educational actions during the month of May to raise awareness among mothers in the municipality about the importance of this practice.

Rigorous work done with love

To provide all necessary support to donors, as well as guarantee the health and survival of premature babies admitted to the neonatal ICU of the Regional Hospital, the Human Milk Bank has cutting-edge equipment and qualified professionals.

The process until the milk reaches the babies who need it is long: the material goes through several stages until it is ready, such as defrosting, rebottling (where the raw and liquid milk is transferred to a standardized bottle) and pasteurization, which occurs to prevent the transmission of pathogenic agents. In addition, the milk also goes through a rigorous quality control process to check contaminants, and a physical-chemical process, where its acidity is analyzed.

“We need to guarantee the quality of this milk, both sanitary and functional, because it will be the best food for these babies born prematurely. This milk has several substances, mainly the immunological part, which will help this baby to recover faster, prevent infections in the hospital environment and soon be discharged”, explains the Bank’s director, Epoliana Garrote.

She also adds that all milk stored after completing the stages is controlled and labeled according to a series of criteria, such as acidity level and number of calories, as each baby may have different needs, depending on factors such as weight and age.
