Abril Verde is a global movement that seeks to clarify and raise awareness among workers, employers and the general population about the need for safety and health in the workplace. In Roraima, the Legislative Assembly (ALE-RR) contributes to the campaign through the institution of the Occupational Health Promotion and Prevention Week and the State Day in Memory of Victims of Accidents and Work-Related Injuries (State Law No. 973/ 2014).

Standards approved by ALE-RR contribute to work accident prevention campaigns

The date, part of the State’s Official Calendar of events, is remembered every year in the week of April 28th, celebrated internationally as Occupational Safety and Health Day.

Authored by former state deputy Erci de Moraes, the article encourages state government bodies to promote events to raise awareness among employees and employers about the importance of a healthy and safe work environment. The idea of the standard is to demonstrate the degrees of risk of urban and rural activities and the corresponding form of prevention.

Other state standards

Law No. 1,430/2020 prohibits the use of personal protective equipment and clothing by healthcare professionals outside the work environment. The text aims to ensure the correct use of these materials, avoiding wear and contamination in places other than the healthcare establishment, with warnings and fines being the penalties for non-compliance with the law.

Law No. 1,395/2020 authorized the Executive Branch of Roraima to provide Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for all health and public safety professionals who were working directly to care for people as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The measure was intended to ensure the protection of these workers during the health crisis.

For those interested in researching legal standards related to this subject or any other, simply access the ALE-RR Support System for the Legislative Process (SAPL). The website lists both the approved and sanctioned laws and the proposals being processed in the Legislative House.

Prevention

Occupational safety is the main function of work engineer Samuel Costa. He is responsible for proposing measures aimed at reducing the risk of accidents at work and, therefore, has listed some safety standards for workers.

“We offer several safety rules and guidance to our employees. We carry out admission exams to ensure that each employee is able to perform their activities safely, as well as providing specific training for the use of machines and equipment”, commented the engineer about the first measures taken.

Furthermore, Samuel highlighted that there is also the Daily Security Dialogue (DDS). “This is a daily guiding practice that reinforces the importance of safety standards. Furthermore, we regularly monitor working conditions and provide the necessary personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves, glasses, helmets, uniforms and boots”, he added.

For occupational physician Marlene de Andrade, campaigns such as Abril Verde are essential for preventing accidents. “Incredible as it may seem, we have few occupational doctors and, therefore, the educational movements aimed at workers’ health are wonderful,” she emphasized.
