With the constant and rapid growth of Artificial Intelligence tools, we come across news that seems to have come straight out of movies. To get into this mood, we selected 8 incredible films about AI. Warning: some of them today can be seen almost as horror titles.

1. Ex-Machina (2015)
Young programmer Caleb Smith (Domhnall Gleeson) wins a competition to visit the luxurious and isolated home of the CEO of the company he works for, Nathan Bateman (Oscar Isaac). The environment is cold, technological and strange. Nathan lives with the silent servant Kyoko and reveals to Caleb that he has built a humanoid AI robot, Ava (Alicia Vikander).
Ava shows herself to be genuinely capable of thinking and having consciousness. Enchanted by her, Caleb begins to question Nathan’s principles. But will it be possible to establish a relationship with Ava, even knowing that she is artificial?

3. I, Robot (2004)
In the year 2035, humanoid robots serve humans in different areas. Detective Del Spooner (Will Smith) is called to investigate the death of his old friend, Dr. Alfred Lanning (James Cromwell), an employee of the company US Robotics.
What was being touted as a suicide becomes an investigation to find out whether a robot named Sonny was able to break the Three Laws of Robotics, which dictate that robots cannot harm humans.

5. Blade Runner (1982)
A cinema classic, this work by Ridley Scott starred Harrison Ford. The iconic actor plays worn-out police officer Rick Deckard, in 2019 Los Angeles. In this dystopian future, synthetic humans known as “replicants” are altered and guided by the powerful Tyrell Corporation to work in space colonies.
A group of advanced “replicants” ends up escaping from one of the colonies and returns to Earth. Now Rick Deckard has to hunt them down.

7. Matrix (1999)
Another film that marked the history of cinema as a whole and the science fiction genre. The Matrix takes place in a dystopian cyberpunk future in which the reality experienced by most humans is actually a simulation called the Matrix, created by machines that subjugate the human population.
The plot follows programmer and cybercriminal Neo, who ends up joining the rebellion against machines. It won 4 Oscars and was a box office success, the work was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being “culturally, historically and aesthetically significant”.

Bonus: Big Hero 6 (2014)
To finish the list and remind you that AI also has a promising and positive side, we brought an Oscar winner for Best Animated Film. In the fictional city of San Fransokyo, young Hiro Hamada shares a fascination with technology with his older brother, Tadashi. When Tadashi dies, however, the boy must face pain and new challenges.
To his surprise, he ends up having Baymax, a friendly inflatable robot built by Tadashi as a medical assistant. Hiro ends up joining his brother’s lab companions, each with expertise in an area of technology. Together, they must face a possible conspiracy.
