According to a statement, the Navy coordinated the medical rescue through the Ponta Delgada Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC Delgada), in conjunction with the Orientation Center for Urgent Patients – Maritime (CODU – MAR).

The medical rescue of the 70-year-old passenger, of British nationality, who was on board the ship “Oasis of the Seas”, flying the Bahamas flag, which was sailing approximately 486 nautical miles (the equivalent of 900 kilometers) from west of the Azorean island of São Miguel, was coordinated by the Navy since 3:32 pm on Saturday.

The Navy explained that the passenger “presented a clinical picture of acute appendicitis and was in need of urgent hospital medical care”.

“The disembarkation was carried out in the port of Horta, on the island of Faial, at 08:00 today, April 28th, using a vessel from the ship itself”, according to the note.

The source said that the patient was later transferred to a hospital unit on the island of Faial, via an ambulance from the Azores Regional Civil Protection and Fire Service (SRPCBA).

MRCC Delgada, CODU – MAR, SRPCBA and the National Maritime Authority were involved in the operation, through the Port Authority of Horta.
