Director and actor Carlos Avilez passed away this Tuesday, aged 88, victim of cardio-respiratory arrest, at Cascais Hospital. The news was confirmed to PÚBLICO by a source from the Escola Profissional do Teatro Experimental de Cascais, of which he was one of the founders.

Carlos Avilez was admitted to Cascais Hospital on Tuesday with an illness, and died at around 2 am in that hospital unit, reports Lusa.

“It is with immense regret that the Teatro Experimental de Cascais announces the death of director Carlos Avilez, victim of heart disease”, informs in a statement sent to the press the company he founded and to which he dedicated himself until the end of his life. Highlights in his long professional career include the roles he assumed as director of the Teatro Nacional S. João and the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II, as well as President of the Institute of Performing Arts and the creation of the Escola Profissional de Teatro de Cascais .

Carlos Vitor Machado, better known as Carlos Avilez, was born in 1935, and made his professional debut as an actor in 1956, at Companhia Amélia Rey Colaço – Robles Monteiro, where he remained until 1963.

With a life dedicated to theater, he was one of the founders of the Teatro Experimental de Cascais, which celebrated 58 years of existence on November 13th.
