RRecently, at the University of Oxford, in the United Kingdom, a team of researchers discovered that a simple blood test can help identify people who are at most immediate risk of dying from heart failure. If you don’t know, heart failure is “a serious and chronic disease that occurs when the heart is unable to pump blood to the body in the required quantity”, as well as “relax and receive blood again in a normal way”, explains the National Health Service.

This research, published in the European Journal of Heart Failure and cited in Metro, revealed that patients with higher amounts of a specific protein are more likely to die from a heart complication.

It is a chemical called neuropeptide Y, or NPY, capable of regulating brain activity and digestion. Normally, the heart releases it when we are stressed and it can cause the heart to work harder than necessary, researchers explain.

To reach this conclusion, researchers analyzed more than 800 adults in different stages of heart failure. They thus concluded that a third of the people involved in the study had higher levels of NPY.

They also had “a 50% greater risk of dying during the three-year follow-up period due to a heart complication, compared to people with lower levels.”
