Dengue: North, Central-West and Southeast have a slowdown in cases

-

Acre, Amapá and Amazonas, in the North Region, Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais, in the Southeast, in addition to practically the entire Center-West, with the exception of Mato Grosso Sul, show signs of a slowdown in new cases of dengue. “They have already reached their peak and are coming down”, explained the Secretary of Health and Environmental Surveillance at the Ministry of Health, Ethel Maciel.

According to her, patterns of previous dengue epidemics in the country demonstrate that the period for a location to reach the peak of the disease is around eight weeks, from the beginning of recording cases. As the disease hit Brazilian states at different times, those that started the epidemic earlier should achieve a slowdown sooner, after a period of eight weeks.

During a press conference, Ethel highlighted that the state of São Paulo is also showing signs of a slowdown in the registration of new dengue cases, but that the department needs to wait another week to confirm this scenario. “One more week to understand if we have reached the peak”, she added.

Numbers

Data from the folder indicate 2,321,050 probable cases of dengue in Brazil, 20,844 of which are cases of severe dengue or with warning signs. There are still 831 confirmed deaths and 1,267 under investigation. The incidence rate of dengue in the country, at the moment, is 1,143 cases for every 100 thousand inhabitants and the lethality among cases classified as serious is 3.99%.

Eleven states have already declared a public health emergency due to the explosion of cases of the disease. They are: Acre, Amapá, Distrito Federal, Goiás, Espírito Santo, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo. There are also 407 municipal public health emergency decrees motivated by dengue.
