The number of deaths from dengue fever this year across the state of Rio rises to 65, according to the Health Intelligence Center. The number could be higher, as another 70 deaths are under investigation. More than 168,000 probable cases of the disease have been recorded.

In the capital, there are five confirmed deaths and more than 80 thousand cases of the disease. The West Zone of Rio is the region with the highest number of cases in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, mainly in the neighborhoods of Campo Grande, Santa Cruz and Bangu.

According to the municipal health secretary, Daniel Soranz, the peak of dengue cases in Rio, which normally occurs in April and May, may have been brought forward to January and February because of climate change.

While the numbers continue to grow, the vaccination campaign continues with low adherence. So far, only 102 thousand children and adolescents have been immunized. The city hall’s expectation is that another 30,000 will take the doses.

This Thursday, the age group of 10 to 14 years old is immunized against dengue in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.
