Pope Francis will participate in the G7 led by Italy, which will be held from June 13 to 15 in Borgo Egnazia, in Apulia, in the south of the country. The information was confirmed by the Holy See Press Office following the announcement by the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, who, in a video, specified that the Pontiff will speak at the session dedicated to artificial intelligence open to non-member countries.

It is the first time that a Pontiff has participated in the summit meeting of the group, which is also made up of, in addition to Italy, the United States, Canada, France, United Kingdom, Germany and Japan.

“I sincerely thank the Holy Father for accepting Italy’s invitation. His presence gives shine to our nation and the entire G7,” said Meloni, emphasizing how the Italian government intends to value the contribution made by the Holy See on the issue of artificial intelligence , in particular with the “Rome call for Ai ethics in 2020”, promoted by the Pontifical Council for Life, in a path “that leads to giving concrete application to the concept of algoretics, that is, giving ethics to algorithms”.

“I am convinced that the Pope’s presence will contribute decisively to the definition of a regulatory, ethical and cultural framework for artificial intelligence,” added Meloni.

For the prime minister, artificial intelligence will be “the greatest anthropological challenge of this era”, “a technology that can generate great opportunities, but which also brings with it enormous risks, in addition to inevitably affecting global balances”.

“Our commitment is to develop governance mechanisms to ensure that artificial intelligence is human-centered and human-controlled, that is, that it keeps the person at the center and has the person as its ultimate end.”
