Dalways have too little and bad? We have bad news. Researchers have found a link between sleeping less than seven hours (almost) daily and a significant increase in blood pressure over time.

It is the conclusion of an analysis of 16 studies carried out between January 2000 and May 2023 and which evaluated the incidence of hypertension in more than one million people from six countries

They thus discovered that “short sleep duration was associated with a greater risk of developing hypertension”, something proven despite demographic and cardiovascular risk factors.

More specifically, they concluded that “sleeping less than seven hours was associated with a 7% increase in the risk of developing high blood pressure”, a number that “increased to 11% when sleep duration was less than five hours”.

“More research is needed to assess the association between sleep duration and high blood pressure using more precise methods, such as polysomnography, a method to assess sleep quality more accurately,” explains Kaveh Hosseini, one of the study leaders.
