After the departure of Natalina de Almeida, director of Caras, Caras Decoração and Activa, who resigned from her position as editorial director of Trust in News (TIN) in recent weeks, the interim management of the three publications will be ensured by the current publishers executives, Ana Oliveira, Teresa Mafalda and Cíntia Sakellarides, Luís Delgado, owner of the company, said in statements to Meios & Publicidade.

“From April 1st, they will temporarily and temporarily perform these functions, for as long as necessary. Afterwards, I don’t know if a director will be appointed or if several directors will be chosen for these magazines”, says the person in charge.

One of the scenarios on the table involves re-concentrating the management of the three publications in a single person, although the possibility of the three magazines having individual directors has not been ruled out by the administration. “Caras and Caras Decoração could also have the same director and Activa another”, says Luís Delgado.

Regardless of the decision made by the administration in the coming weeks, one thing is certain. TIN will not go to the market to hire. “The replacement will be done internally. At this stage, it is not possible for anyone to come from outside. We are all trying to survive the issues currently facing the media”, assumes the businessman.

The difficulties are known. In recent months, magazines have reached newsstands and subscribers late, a situation that Luís Delgado undervalues, despite confirming delays in the payment of salaries and subsidies since November. “We are making every effort to regularize and stabilize the situation”, he assures.

“There is always some delay, but this is an issue that we try to resolve every day. We are trying to balance the books”, guarantees the owner of TIN, who points the finger at the State for not respecting the payment of postage paid, an incentive provided for in the Incentive Regime for Reading Periodical Publications.

“For many years he has done so, in part, in regional media bodies, but not in national bodies”, criticizes Luís Delgado again, after having already done so publicly on several occasions, since 2020. Free and full distribution from Lusa’s services to all the media is another of the businessman’s aspirations.

“As predicted by the Government that will leave now, [essa medida] It is absolutely decisive and urgent. It makes no sense not to have this support. All media companies have this expense. Lusa’s money comes from the State budget, to which we also contribute. We are paying twice”, warns the owner of the TIN.

“The State does not have to put money into the media, but it has to accept paying for things that are fundamental to the pillars of democracy. Just as he puts, and very well, money into RTP, Lusa and RDP. But, then, you must give the same type of support to others, just as you also had to apply an internet fee, which you currently do not charge”, he highlights.

Despite the economic difficulties that national media are currently facing, with the reduction in newsstand sales, the reduction in advertising investment and the increase in paper and production and distribution costs, which have worsened with the Russian invasion of Ukraine, selling or closing the publisher’s titles is not, however, in the businessman’s plans.

“Since January 2023, we have had a very functional strategic restructuring plan and we believe that our stabilization of the company will happen, we estimate, at the end of the second half of this year”, predicts Luís Delgado.
