In less than three months, Brazil broke a record for dengue cases for a single year, with almost 1.9 million infections in 2024, according to data released this Monday (18) by the Ministry of Health.

In the first 11 epidemiological weeks of the year, there were 1,889,206 confirmed and probable infections, compared to 400,197 reported in the same period of 2023. The government’s Arbovirus Panel also counts 561 confirmed deaths from dengue in 2024, while 1,020 are under investigation.

The previous record for cases was 2015, with 1,688,688 million in the entire year, followed by 2023, with 1,658,816.

In the city of São Paulo, the city hall declared a health emergency, a measure already adopted by nine states (Acre, Espírito Santo, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Paraná, Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and São Paulo) and the Federal District.

The ministry’s Health Surveillance Secretary, Ethel Maciel, reported that the country should reach 4.2 million cases in 2024.
