World Epilepsy Awareness Day, or Purple Day, is celebrated this Tuesday (26/3), being an international effort dedicated to increasing awareness about epilepsy around the world. Aiming to join efforts against the misinformation, stigma and prejudice surrounding the disease, the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas (Aleam) carried out a Transfer of Time, requested by deputy Dr. Gomes, in favor of the executive secretary of Specialized Care, Laís Moraes Ferreira, from the State Department of Health (SES).

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), epilepsy is a chronic brain disease that affects 1 to 2% of the world’s population. It is a neurological condition in which, for a few seconds or minutes, a part of the brain emits incorrect signals, causing seizures that can manifest themselves in seizures or other symptoms, such as absences.

Secretary Laís warned that, based on data from the Ministry of Health (MS), at least three million people have the diagnosis and in Amazonas there are 300 thousand people diagnosed with epilepsy.

“In addition to the physical impacts, there are also psychosocial impacts, which is why it is so important that people living with this condition have the support of health professionals, family members and a society that is truly aware of this condition”, he highlighted.

Moraes also reported that the SES seeks support from the MS, prospecting the possibility of performing surgery in Amazonas, as part of the treatment of epilepsy.

“We seek to strengthen medical care and support for these patients, so that we can provide these people with more dignified and comfortable living conditions,” said the secretary, reinforcing the importance of informing and talking about the disease, aiming to reduce prejudice.
