(ANSA) – A young man was diagnosed with dengue fever and hospitalized at the Policlínica San Martino, in Genoa, after returning from a trip through Argentina.
The Italian, whose identity was not revealed, showed up at the medical center after recognizing the symptoms by listening to information campaigns on TV and reading them on social media.
According to reports, he, who was admitted to the infectious diseases department, is in good health and has already been discharged. “Having released information about dengue in these first two months of 2024 worked,” said the director of the infectious diseases clinic at Policlínica San Martino, Matteo Bassetti.
The expert highlighted that “the applause, therefore, goes to everyone, from the Ministry of Health to the promoters who explained that there is a problem in South America.”
According to Bassetti, it will now be important to start immediately with disinfestation, which is the responsibility of local administrations. In recent days, dengue vaccines have also been ordered in Liguria.
About a month ago, Italy increased the alert level for people arriving from South America, asking for maximum attention not only at airports, but also at sea ports, especially for cargo of important goods coming from countries where there is a risk of contracting the disease.
On March 22, Bassetti reinforced that the Ministry of Health was right to “urge the regions to carry out greater surveillance against dengue”.
