PUC Minas opens its planetarium this Tuesday (2). The ten meter diameter dome with capacity for almost 80 people will offer a variety of activities for the visiting public, such as astronomy film screenings, lectures, interactive exhibitions, educational activities, special events and sky observations. The new space, designed by professor, physicist and astronomer Peter Leroy, who died prematurely, began work in 2014, with the support of the Minas Gerais State Research Foundation (Fapemig).

With a weekly visit schedule from Tuesday to Saturday, the planetarium will offer school presentations, teacher training, courses and lectures for the general public, complementing scientific learning in schools and universities, being a space designed to promote education and culture, integration between theory and practice, support for research and extension and dissemination of scientific knowledge. During the inauguration, which will take place this Tuesday, at 4pm, at the PUC Minas Museum of Natural Sciences, there will be a lecture “The importance of planetariums and scientific dissemination today”, which will be given by Marcelo Gleiser, physicist, astronomer and professor at Dartmouth College (USA). The lecture will be broadcast live on the PUC Minas Lives channel, on YouTube.

Life Circuit Race

The Association for the Prevention of Cancer in Women (Asprecam) will promote on World Health Day, celebrated on April 7, the Circuito Vida, a race with the purpose of raising public awareness about the importance of self-care and breast cancer prevention. The event will be held at Parque Juscelino Kubitschek, in Sion, from 8am. More than a simple sporting activity, it will be a celebration of Asprecam’s 40 years of activity, which leads the Mamamiga pela Vida Movement, committed to defending women’s lives, self-care and solidarity. For Mônica Bessa, president of Asprecam, it is essential to talk about preventive measures as many cases can be avoided.

“Breast cancer is the type that most affects women around the world, both in developing and developed countries. According to data from the National Cancer Institute (Inca), for Brazil, 73,610 new cases of breast cancer were estimated in 2023, with an estimated risk of 66.54 cases per 100 thousand women, which represents the biggest cause of mortality for cancer to enter the female universe”, he explains.

Family orchestra recital

The second recital of the May Festival will be with the Orquestra Família Barros & Amigos, this Tuesday, at 8:30 pm, at the Teatro do Centro Cultural Unimed-BH Minas. This concert features two tributes addressed to the late members of this group – D. Aparecida and William Martins de Barros – and features the special participation of Daniel Barros, on the piano, and Benjamin Barros, on the clarinet. Tickets cost R$20 (full) and R$10 (half) and can be purchased on the Sympla website and at the theater box office. The rating is 10 years.

The repertoire of this recital includes works by Bach (1685-1750), Carlos Gomes (1836-1-896), Astor Piazzola (1921-1992), Mendelssohn (1809-1847), Mozart (1756-1791) and the conductor will be the maestro Marco Antônio Drumond. Carlos Gomes’ work, “Who knows?”, will be dedicated to D. Aparecida, and Piazzola’s, “Oblivion”, to William Barros. The couple Joaquim Inácio and Aparecida had five children, all of whom became professional musicians. There are eight grandchildren, some already established in the profession and others on the way.

Photo exhibition

More than recording moments, photography is capable of revealing memories and awakening awareness about being in the world. This is the path taken in the exhibition “Revela”, by the artist Coniiin, which is on display at Casa Fiat de Cultura from Tuesday until May 19th. The exhibition features 12 photographs and a lambe-lambe installation and was selected in the 7th Piccola Galleria Selection Program.

To mark the opening, this Tuesday, at 7pm, a chat will be held with the artist, at Casa Fiat de Cultura, in addition to a mediated visit. All programming is free. In “Revela”, the artist portrays themes with which he identifies and people who inspire him. Through the lens, he captures a series of details that celebrate time, contours, identity and diversity of black skin, in a visual journey that transcends the superficial look. Coniiin has been covering events for years, especially the reggae and hip hop scene, with black artists.
