The relationship between dengue fever and hair loss: understand the case

Dengue, a disease known for its characteristic symptoms, can be surprising as it is related not only to high fevers and body aches, but also to hair loss in some patients. According to Manuela Recoder, a doctor specializing in trichology and founder of the Mariotto Recoder Institute, this phenomenon is the result of a condition called acute telogen effluvium, which can occur after the body goes through events of great stress, such as viral infections, including dengue.

“Hair loss caused by dengue fever can begin between 8 and 12 weeks after infection with the virus, demonstrating the importance of preventive measures against the Aedes aegypti mosquito”, warns Manuela Recoder. She emphasizes that this type of temporary hair loss, although worrying for those who experience it, is a reversible condition.

The exact relationship between dengue fever and hair loss is still not completely understood, as Manuela explains. However, factors such as the inflammatory response triggered by the virus, emotional and physical stress during the illness, and metabolic stress caused by the immune system response can contribute to the triggering of telogen effluvium.

“During dengue fever, the body goes through an inflammatory response that can affect the hair growth cycle, leading to hair loss”, explains the doctor. “In addition, the physical and emotional stress associated with the symptoms of the disease can harm the body’s nutritional balance, compromising the health of the hair.”

It is important to highlight that not everyone affected by dengue will develop telogen effluvium. “If you experience this side effect, know that it is temporary and can be treated”, reassures the doctor. “Hair loss caused by dengue can be felt one to three months after infection, but it can also take some time to return to normal.”

Therefore, understanding the relationship between dengue fever and hair loss highlights the importance not only of preventing the disease, but also of medical monitoring during and after the infection, especially to monitor possible side effects like this.
