QWhen you step on the scale you should remember that “weight is complex and, therefore, can be difficult to manage”, warns Karla Robinson, a doctor, quoted in BestLife. Generally, there are multiple factors that determine weight management, meaning “creating habits that address these factors can help you lose weight more effectively,” she adds.

What are the factors that most influence weight? With the help of a dietician, the doctor reveals some of the most common ones that many forget. Read with attention.

Factors that have an impact on weight:

  • Age. “The older you get, the less muscle mass you have in your body,” explains the doctor. This can cause “your metabolism to slow down and retain fat”;
  • Go on fad diets. “They don’t work because they are often restrictive; they typically don’t advocate healthy lifestyle changes; and they can encourage the skipping of entire food groups, like carbohydrates,” warns Nichole Dandrea-Russert, a registered dietitian;
  • Sleep deprivation. “Getting at least seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night can have a positive impact on your body’s metabolism and help regulate the hormones that let your body know you’re hungry throughout the day,” explains Karla Robinson;
  • Stress. Generally, “cortisol, in the right amount, helps the body respond to danger, so it’s important.” When you produce too much of it it can “cause sleep disturbances, which is harmful to your metabolism and making sensible food choices”, says Nichole Dandrea-Russert;
  • Genetics. “It plays a significant role in the body’s sensitivity to weight gain,” says Robinson. Generally, “inherited genetic characteristics include how the body stores fat, metabolic rates, and exercise capacity. You may also inherit an underlying disease that makes weight loss a challenge”;
  • Eat little fiber. In case you didn’t know, “fiber prevents constipation and can help control weight due to its ability to fill you up quickly and keep you fuller for longer.” It is also essential for intestinal health.
