The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa), on April 15, sent to the states of Alagoas, Ceará, Paraíba, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte, Circular Letter No. 28/2024 anticipating the vaccination campaign against foot-and-mouth disease for the month of April, with the goal of completion by the 30th, with no possibility of extension.

The decision was taken by the Animal Health Department of the Agricultural Defense Secretariat of Mapa, after a meeting with the management team of the Strategic Plan of the National Foot-and-Mouth Disease Eradication Program (PE-PNEFA) and assessment of the technical conditions.

The expectation is that the anticipation of vaccination together with the implementation of other actions described in PE-PNEFA will result in health progress, contributing to the recognition of the Brazilian territory as free from foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination.

To carry out the transition of health status, the states and the Federal District must meet the criteria defined in the Strategic Plan, which is aligned with the guidelines of the Land Code of the World Organization for Animal Health (OMSA). The goal is for Brazil to become completely free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination by 2026.

In addition to the five northeastern states, the units of the Federation of Bahia, Maranhão, Pará, Piauí, Rio de Janeiro, Roraima, Sergipe and part of the state of Amazonas will also be vaccinated for the last time until April 30th.

Vaccines must be purchased from authorized resellers and kept between 2°C and 8°C, from acquisition to the moment of use – including transport and application, already on the farm. New needles must be used to apply the 2 mL dose to the neck of each animal, preferring the cooler hours of the day, to adequately contain the animals and apply the vaccine.

In addition to vaccinating the herd, the producer must also declare it to the animal health defense agency in his state. The vaccination declaration must be made within the deadlines stipulated by the state veterinary service.

In case of doubt, the advice is to seek clarification from the animal health defense agency in your state.
