Dive/SC publishes guidelines after confirmation of cases of Oropouche fever

Santa Catarina recorded the first cases in the state’s history of Oropouche fever, the Santa Catarina Epidemiological Surveillance Directorate (Dive/SC) announced this Friday (26). The patients are from Botuverá, in the Itajaí Valley.

A The disease has symptoms similar to dengue and is transmitted by mosquitoesmainly Culicoides paraensisknown as maruim and responsible for an emergency decree in Luiz Alves, in the same region, and the Culex quinquefasciatuspopularly called mosquito.

As these insects reproduce in places with organic matter, unlike Aedes aegyptiwhich needs still water, population control of these mosquitoes is more difficult.

“At this moment, the advice for people is to keep their backyard clean, maintain individual protection measures, screens on windows, use repellent, in short, to avoid mosquito bites”, said the director of Dive/SC, João Augusto Fuck.

There are also specific recommendations for residents of the municipality with confirmed cases. “For people who live in the municipality of Botuverá, the guidance is that they maintain monitoring in the health service, the professionals are aware”, added the director.

In Botuverá, the disease was confirmed on Thursday (25) through a laboratory test. Patients presented symptoms between April 10th and 15th.

After collecting samples that proved not to be dengue, samples were sent for diagnosis of oropouche fever. You patients are between 18 and 40 years old and have no history of moving out of stateaccording to Dive.

The state and municipality have already started the epidemiological investigation and will develop a series of complementary actions on site.

These include collecting information on suspected and confirmed cases, collecting mosquitoes and forwarding samples from other patients for testing by the Santa Catarina Central Public Health Laboratory (Lacen), with the aim of strengthening disease surveillance.

According to the Ministry of Health, Oropouche Fever is caused by an arbovirus.

You symptoms They are similar to dengue fever and chikungunya fever. Are they:

  • muscle pain
  • joint pain
  • nausea
  • diarrhea

There is no specific treatment. Patients must remain at rest, with symptoms treated, and be monitored by the municipal health network, according to Dive.

The disease began to be registered in Brazil in 1960 and occurred more in the North of the country, according to the director of Dive/SC.

Emergency due to maruim in Luiz Alves

The decree was made on March 27th. Residents of the municipality report discomfort due to the insect’s bites.
