Walking after meals has always been associated with the belief that such activity can help with digestion. Recently, however, scientific studies prove that, in addition to aiding digestion, the practice also helps regulate blood sugar levels.

This is highlighted by a study published in the journal Sports Medicine, revealing that a brief 15-minute walk, especially after a meal, can have a significant effect on reducing blood sugar. The study reached this conclusion after analyzing seven studies, all focused on the relationship between the postprandial state (after a meal) and certain physical activities such as: sitting, standing and walking.

How much time is needed?

Short walks, lasting just two to five minutes, already cause significant reductions in blood glucose levels, the study results indicate. However, ideally this brief exercise should be performed every 20 to 30 minutes during the day.

It is also worth noting that this guidance and benefits apply to people with type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes as well as those without these conditions.

Furthermore, it was observed that standing after a meal also resulted in benefits for lowering blood sugar, although to a lesser extent when compared to walking.

Why does this trick help control sugar levels?

According to Aidan Buffey, a graduate student at the University of Limerick, Ireland, and author of the article, moderate physical activity, such as walking, involves muscular action.

When we move, our muscles consume glucose, thus contributing to reducing blood sugar levels. The mechanism is especially useful for people with diabetes, where controlling blood glucose levels is essential to avoid complications.

In summary, walking after meals is a simple and effective strategy for glycemic control. If walking for 60 to 90 minutes seems like a challenge, start by taking a walk around the block, the important thing is to move.
