Is feeling severe chest pain immediately a sign of a heart attack? In fact, this symptom is not always as alarming as it seems. In some cases, it may just be a sign of indigestion.
The Well + Good website spoke to gastroenterologist Neena Mohan to better understand this issue. “Certainly, indigestion can result in chest pain,” she explains.
Acid reflux can cause a burning or tight sensation in the chest. When it becomes severe enough, it can cause esophagitis, which is inflammation of the lining of the esophagus. Additionally, heartburn can also be associated with chest pain.
“Anxiety can intensify reflux-related symptoms and contribute to chest pain,” he adds. According to the Mayo Clinic, chest pain caused by a heart attack can radiate to the arm or shoulder, accompanied by heartburn, vomiting and nausea.
