Amid the rise in dengue cases in the state, the director of the Epidemiological Surveillance Center (CVE) of the State Department of Health, Tatiana Lang D’Agostini, issued a warning this Thursday about the main measures to prevent the disease.

“The main way to protect yourself is to eliminate breeding sites for the Aedes Aegypti mosquito, which is responsible for transmitting the dengue, Zika and Chikungunya viruses. It is important that the entire population takes at least 10 minutes out of their week to evaluate their backyard and eliminate any place that could be a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes,” he says.

For those who have already contracted dengue, the director states that hydration is the main recommendation to avoid a worsening of the clinical condition. She pays attention to the main symptoms of the disease. “It is important to be aware of some warning signs and symptoms that may appear, such as abdominal pain, vomiting and even nose and gum bleeding”, explains Tatiana.

Vaccination against dengue is available in 264 cities in the State of São Paulo for people aged 10 to 14 years old.

Yellow fever

The São Paulo administration also highlights the importance of the population for the risk of contamination by Yellow Fever, after the state recorded, on March 29, the first death confirmed by the disease in 2024.

The case involved a 50-year-old man, resident of Águas de Lindóia and who was also traveling through the Monte Sião region in Minas Gerais. Furthermore, a case was identified in the rural area of Serra Negra, involving a 28-year-old man, who was vaccinated and recovered completely.

The Director of the SP Epidemiological Surveillance Center, Tatiana Lang, reinforces that vaccination is the main way to protect yourself from yellow fever.

“The vaccine is available in all health centers in the State of São Paulo in the basic vaccination schedule: for children in two doses – at nine months and also at four years – and for the entire adult population, in a single dose for the life”, he explains.

Until April 22nd, throughout the state, vaccination coverage against Yellow Fever was 68.47% for children under one year of age.

It is important to remember that, in 2018, due to the numerous cases of the disease, the Ministry of Health adopted the splitting of doses of the yellow fever vaccine in three states: Bahia, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. The measure was recommended by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) as one of the immunization strategies, as it is an emergency. Anyone who was vaccinated with a fractional dose at the time must undergo a new vaccination after an interval of eight years.
