Three women were diagnosed with AIDS (HIV) after receiving treatments in an unlicensed SPA.

Although the transmission of the disease from non-sterile injections is a known risk, North American authorities guarantee that these are the first confirmed cases of virus transmission in an aesthetic procedure with needles.

According to the report, cited by NPR, the first case emerged in 2018, when the New Mexico state health department opened the investigation into SPA after being notified of the case of a woman, around 40 years old and without factors. risk associated with HIV, who had tested positive.

The investigation led to the closure of the establishment, in the autumn of the same year, and the opening of proceedings against the owner for practicing unlicensed medicine.

The report argues that research has proven how important it is to require infection control practices in spaces that provide cosmetic needle procedures, and it has been proven that needles were reused in cosmetic treatments.

In the three cases mentioned, the procedure is the same. “Vampire facial”, or microneedling procedure with platelet-rich plasma, is a procedure done to rejuvenate the skin by extracting blood from the recipient, separating its components and injecting the plasma with needles into the face.
