Today, the councilor of the Funchal City Council (CMF), which oversees the environment, Nádia Coelho, carried out an inaugural visit with the services of the Environment Department to the Community Composter installed at the University of Madeira.

This composter is the result of a joint initiative between the Municipality of Funchal and the University of Madeira, expressing a commitment to building a greener and more ecologically conscious city.

According to Nádia Coelho, UMA’s Community Composter allows the university community to transform its organic waste into natural fertilizer. The system consists of three compartments (1m3 each) where waste is deposited and decomposed by microorganisms.

With due maintenance and monitoring carried out by the University of Madeira itself, the resulting compost will be used as natural fertilizer in university gardens and vegetable gardens, providing environmental and agricultural benefits.

It should also be noted that, currently, the municipality has a total of nine composters, six installed in the Quinta Falcão I and IV Housing Complexes, Santo Amaro, Ribeira Grande, Hospital and Viveiros, which serve around 200 families and around 532 residents, one in Garrison Regiment nº3, one in the Sagrada Família Psychopedagogical Rehabilitation Center in Funchal and this one, at the University of Madeira.

2,903 kg of compost have already been produced, which corresponds to 17,418 kg of recovered organic waste, thus preventing it from being sent to Meia-Serra Station.

Community composting appears as a local treatment solution for bio-waste, allowing costs to be reduced and associated environmental impacts to be reduced. The proposed community composting model is based on good solid waste management practices.

Another step is being taken to promote the local treatment of bio-waste and the circularity of this important flow, in line with Funchal City Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability.
