Viseu Chamber buys properties to increase housing in parishes

Local authority approved the acquisition of ten buildings in an investment of 225 thousand euros. Purchases were made in the municipality’s rural parishes

The Viseu City Council approved the purchase of ten properties within the scope of the Local Housing Strategy, in an investment of 225 thousand euros.

The houses will be rehabilitated and used for renting in a decision taken at yesterday’s executive meeting (March 14).

The deal involves acquisitions in the parishes of Barreiros and Cegãos, Coutos de Viseu, São Cipriano and Vil de Souto, Silgueiros, Santos Êvos and Rio de Loba.

“This measure is intended to promote the rehabilitation of degraded buildings and combat desertification in rural parishes, promoting their repopulation and diversifying the range of housing responses”, explains the municipality of Viseu in a statement.

The Viseu Local Housing Strategy will invest around 45 million euros in public housing by the end of 2025 and has the support of the 1st Right program. The objective is to try to resolve 435 housing shortages in the municipality.

Another of the Chamber’s goals is to “abandon the stereotype” of housing in the context of a social neighborhood and guarantee “new and differentiated responses” through the purchase and rehabilitation of buildings in the urban rehabilitation area and in peripheral parishes “thus contributing, in a indelible, for the social and territorial cohesion of the municipality” through the construction of new houses and the rehabilitation of Bairro da Cadeia, among other works.
