Alegrete pays homage to writer Isaura Correia Santos and perpetuates the memory of this illustrious Alegrete native

In an initiative that aims to mark the 110th anniversary of his birth and perpetuate his memory for future generations, the parish of Alegrete paid tribute yesterday, the 14th, to the illustrious writer and journalist from Alegrete Isaura Correia Santos.

This tribute, which united the Parish Council and the Basic School of Alegrete in the same purpose, was marked by several initiatives, which began with the unveiling of a plaque on the house where Isaura Correia Santos lived in the village, in front of dozens of people from Alegrete who joined to the tribute.

Then, the Isaura Correia Santos library was opened at the Basic School of Alegrete, which was created on the initiative of the teachers and which had the support of the Nossa Senhora de Fátima Community Center through the offer of some books.

Thursday’s evening was also marked by the opening of the exhibition “Life and Work of Isaura Correia Santos” with the estate provided by the Sociedade Recreativa Musical Alegretense.

The Commemorative Session was attended by professor António Delicado, who introduced those present to the author’s life and work, professor Olímpica Velez, who had the opportunity to get up close and personal with writing and shared memories she keeps from that time, and with professor Francisco Pacheco who spoke about the importance of instilling in children knowledge of the traditions of his land and the work of Isaura Correia Santos.

And as it was also Professor Francisco’s birthday, the session ended with the singing of congratulations and thanks for all the work that the teacher has done at the School and which extends to the entire community.

The Alegrete Parish Council and the Alegrete Basic School would like to thank the Municipality of Portalegre, the Sociedade Recreativa Musical Alegretense, the Nossa Senhora de Fátima Community Center, the owner of the property Célia Curião and all the people who worked so hard to make this day memorable for all the people of Alegre.
