The National Meeting of Sociology Students (ENES), organized by students from the University of Algarve (UAlg), will take place between the 3rd and 6th of April, on the Gambelas campus.

The event will bring together students, teachers, lovers of the field of Sociology and the general public, from across the country, to discuss issues of contemporary society. There will also be a retrospective and celebration of 50 years of democracy, as well as a perspective on the coming decades. The meeting has the theme “Portugal Global: where we came from and where we are going”.

Participants can count on lectures, debate panels and gatherings in places that allow them to get to know the city of Faro. Topics to be covered include politics, economics, territorial development, education, tourism, among others.

“By employing the principles of interdisciplinarity and plurality, we intend to understand Portugal as a whole, in order to build a freer, fairer and more supportive society”, says the coordinator, Luana Lopes, in a statement. “These student initiatives require dedication, and I believe that more than just a structure is needed, but citizens interested in exercising and practicing democracy. That’s what we set out to organize: a plural, sociological and democratic event,” she added.

The Algarve, sometimes a region “forgotten by central power”, faces economic and social challenges: “high costs of living, low wages and precarious employment”, highlighted Gonçalo Bila, coordinator. However, it demonstrates great potential regarding the “development of a plural society”, with one of the team’s objectives also being the “decentralization of the event”.

“To be able to be the social science that it truly is, empirical, analytical and critical, Sociology needs Freedom. Freedom needs Democracy. And Democracy needs Sociology,” he stated.

Registration is open until March 20th. More information here or on Instagram from ENES.
