The Institute for the Conservation of Nature and Forests (ICNF) will join the plantation that users of the Association of Parents and Friends of Mentally Disabled Citizens (APPACDM) of Viseu will make in Serra do Crasto.
Volunteers will launch seed bombs that were previously prepared by the association in an initiative that takes place next Monday (March 25).
This action is part of the celebrations that ICNF promotes for the International Day of Forests, which takes place this Thursday (21st).
The International Day of Forests was established on November 30, 2012 by the United Nations, with the aim of defending the sustainable management of forests and ensuring that future generations continue to benefit from the services and products derived from all types of forests.
This year, the celebrations are dedicated to the theme: “Forests and innovation: new solutions for a better world”.
According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), every year 10 million hectares of forests are lost due to deforestation and approximately another 70 million hectares are affected by fires.
FAO adds that the restoration of ecosystems, including reforestation efforts, contributes significantly to mitigating climate change and improving food security, also allowing new sustainable uses for wood and other forest products to be achieved.
Last year, Serra do Crasto also received volunteers to help celebrate Forest Day with students from the Escola Superior Agrária de Viseu, the delegation from the Order of Engineers and the Association of Wastelands of the Forest Perimeter of Crasto.
