The Évora regional structure of the PCP described as “a negative development” the reduction in the number of votes and the party’s percentage in this year’s legislative elections, compared to those in 2022, in this Alentejo constituency.

In a statement, the Directorate of the Évora Regional Organization (DOREV) of the PCP added that this “negative development” is “in line with the national results of the CDU”.

Even so, in an analysis of the electoral results of the March 10 legislative elections, DOREV considered that the CDU vote, in the country and in the district, “regardless of its own insufficiencies”, was “an expression of resistance”.

This is because the party faced, among others, “a prolonged framework characterized by hostility and diminishment”, as well as the “continued falsification of the PCP’s positions to feed anti-communist prejudices and narrow its space for growth”, he said.

In the Évora constituency, which had 133,400 registered voters and which elects three deputies to the Assembly of the Republic, the PS received the most votes in the legislative elections on March 10, but lost one of the two deputies to Chega, while the third term was won by the Democratic Alliance (AD).

As in the 2022 legislative elections, the socialists, even though they lost more than 5,000 votes in relation to these elections, won in this circle, with 32.79% (29,309 votes), followed by the AD, formed by the PSD, CDS- PP and PPM, with 22.43% (20,049 votes), and the Chega party, with 19.96% (17,846).

With 1,723 fewer votes than in the 2022 elections, the CDU was left with 10.93% (9,771 votes) and was once again unable to elect a deputy, repeating what had already happened, for the first time since 1976, in the previous legislation.

In the statement, DOREV also ‘pointed batteries’ at the political forces that now elected deputies.

According to the communists, the election of the PS and AD deputies took place “in a context of reduction in the electoral expression of the PS” and “a growth of the PSD/CDS [que ficou] less than what they would like”.

And the election of a Chega deputy was constructed “from lies and the most abject demagoguery, (…) fueled by the right-wing politics of successive governments”, translating, “beyond the reactionary, xenophobic and racist dimension and the discourse of hatred that it promoted, the illusion that thousands of voters were led into under a false discourse against corruption and injustice, of which this party is an active accomplice and promoter.”

“The PCP reaffirms that the action of this and other forces, which, in essence, are substitute forces of other right-wing forces such as the PSD and CDS, will result in the deepening of inequalities and injustices and a growing attack on the rights and living conditions of who lives and works here”, he warned.

And this vote of “many voters” for “forces that are objectively proud of some of the darkest pages of history in our country and our region (…) does not mean a fundamental change in the socio-political composition of the Évora district”, he claimed.

For DOREV, what the results “express above all is the consequence of decades of the same policy practiced by PS and PSD, forces that, despite repeated promises in each election, never fulfilled their commitments”.

In the Évora constituency, in these legislative elections, Luís Dias (PS), Sónia Ramos (AD) and Rui Cristina (Chega) were elected as deputies.

By failing to elect João Dias in the Beja constituency, the CDU (PCP-PEV) was left without parliamentarians in the hemicycle representing Alentejo, for the first time after the 25th of April 1974, which had elections for the Constituent Assembly a year later and the first electoral act for the Assembly of the Republic in 1976.
